David Francois, the legend of Copenhagen

A cold winter day I was in Kafa-x—a wonderful place to do activism in Copenhagen—, having dinner when a sweet short haired person, holding croissants and cakes on a plate, was talking to the crowd, asking whom would have joined him to go to bring those croissants to the people in street.
This scene was one of the most beautiful, interesting, and kind actions I have ever witnessed.
I didn´t go with him, neither I have seen anyone else going with him that night. I was so surprised by his act that I was speechless.
He was a lonely, legendary hero on a bicycle, with croissant and love as the strongest weapons. His flag was the rainbow flag, which included all colors and all the elements.
This action of bringing some snacks and humanity to those who are in the most vulnerable situation is what I have chosen to dedicate my life to:
He inspired hundreds and hundreds of people—if not thousands—his energy can be felt by all of us and we will never believe that he doesn´t exist anymore, I don´t believe it now and I will hardly change my mind in the future.
Alone, he went to talk to sellers in markets around Copenhagen explaining to them that there is something wrong in throwing away food while there are many that could get great benefit from it.
His reasoning was the philosophy of the abundance: if we share resources, we have fewer people hungry, the fewer people are hungry and the less they are keen to commit crimes.
He managed to get agreements for the donation of tons and tons of food.
Without his agreements, Foodsharing Copenhagen, would not even have been the same right now.
Lately, he was busy with a project based on creating low impact community accommodations in rural Denmark.
His personal life amalgamated entirely with his philanthropic projects.
He had thousands and one great ideas and hundreds of eco-social-revolutionary projects:
One of the books that opened my mind about everything behind life:

Foodsharing Copenhagen – The story

Food waste is an issue that we can’t just ignore.
It’s not just a pity to throw away food, but it it’s an act of ignorance, egoism, and self-destruction.

We often forget that huge resources are used  to produce food: from production to the consumer, almost the half of it gets thrown away.
We should remember that there are people which can’t afford even to buy enough food; in Copenhagen, there is a graffiti stating: “someone’s trash, is someone’s else treasure”.

I had the chance to volunteer with and discuss with some of the activists which started Foodsharing Copenhagen

To fight food waste, a movement called Foodsharing started first in Germany, where it is now well-established.
Since about one year it started in Denmark, where it conquered Copenhagen.
Foodsharing Copenhagen was, in the beginning, a really small project, a grassroots initiative.

Foodsharing sign at the start, searching for volunteers in the streets

Thanks to the help of many volunteers, among which there was the great people of Floating City and the legendary Francois—who arranged many agreements with food donors—, it became a well structured non-profit movement with almost 10.000 followers on their Facebook page.

By the way, if you don’t know what Foodsharing is, well, it’s simple: there are weekly events where people can share their food or take food that they need.

Visit the Foodsharing Copenhagen website or the Facebook group for more info.

Foodsharing Copenhagen

People standing in front of boxes full of vegetables.

Food waste is something that should not happen. Not just because it’s a pity to waste that money, but because growing food pollutes, using precious resources and the effects are worldwide. We also can’t accept that in a society there are persons with not enough means to buy food, while others put good food in the garbage.

If you want to collaborate in this project in Copenhagen, please have a look on:

We all think that social community and sharing economy are modern concepts,it is actually not true at all. Since ancient times human community have used developed sharing systems such as give free accommodation to each other and exchange of goods. One main example it’s the hospitality traditions, which always supported helping each other and sharing.

We search, explore and go around the universe to search for other forms of life, but still, we didn’t manage to live in harmony with life we have on earth.
Hopefully, we will meet aliens just when we learned how to live with each other as humans.

How to know when tech is going against nature?
Well, one easy attitude would be to use technology to better understand and follow nature’s rules.

If your grandparents fought for your rights, it doesn’t mean that you don’t have to fight for the rights of your children.

If there is food in your dish, it does not mean that there is no hunger in the world.

Cyclonudista Helsinki 2016 WNBR Finland 12 June – World Naked bike ride

Biking naked in the city

CycloNudista is coming soon!

Get rid of your materialistic possessions and jump on a bicycle with us!

Last event was spectacular, I remember a beautiful situation that made me so proud of being a CycloNudista: a big luxurious car—that may have costed as much as a house—stopped next to us and the driver, astonished, started to take pictures of us. I didn’t feel honored of course, but I felt the power of the simplicity. This to remember that our body is more shining than a supercar.

See you again; Sunday 12 June at 16:00

As human we love to own things, we challenge each other to whom is owning the most and we pass ownership to our offspring. With this system of accumulating and restrict resources into casts we have often huge social and wealth differences. I think this causes the main problems of our society.
Bicycles are equalizing us in a certain way. Being naked too.

Being on a bicycle make us more humble and down to earth, a bit more like animals…

The main points of CycloNudista are of course to Protest against the oil and car culture, celebrating bicycles.
While cycling naked I was thinking about how Animals also have some ‘property’ rules, which we ignore, but they are actually much more fair, sustainable and efficient than ours. For example, we kill or arm bears, or other ‘dangerous’ animals in forests, just because we don’t understand about their territories rules.
One of the simplest, and smartest at the same time, system for animals to define territory and ownership is urine, it seems something of little importance, but actually is a really smart practice.
You urinate just when you are alive, that means that from the moment you die, you have automatically no possession.

I don’t suggest you to pee on your belongings, this was just an inner thought I had making a parallel between human and animal systems. This was just a parallel between humans and animals.

Cycling, is not just nice because you are in contact with nature, get healthier and more spiritual, but also helps us appreciate simple things and the fact that we are independent.

We don’t pretend to save the world by having a naked ride around the city, but we do pretend to send a worldwide message asking more bikes and less cars.

CycloNudista is a way to get back on our roots, to be a bit more natural, at least for a day 😉

and many more cities…

CycloNudista main page:

Ocean Dumping – Boats are destroying the sea, did you know?

Do you know how many boats are on the water right now?
Many more than you can imagine…

Do you know that each of those boats, small or big, is polluting a lot just by running the engines? Many of them use ocean dumping as regular practice to get rid of sludge and other nasty -often toxic- waste.
Did you know?

If you didn’t know, well, now you can read it, I will give you some evidence as well.

With a degree in Nautical Studies for Captains, five years of study plus practical training, graduating with the title of “Engine Cadet”, I have been working on a dozen of boats and I discovered many facts which would shock anyone with a minimum of ethical values.

After witnessing ocean dumping on boats where I was working: “Grimaldi Group Napoli” and “Navigazione due Golfi spa” ,  I knocked at the door of Greenpeace (Antwerp, Belgium) in order to let them know and find out what would have been possible to do. Unfortunately I was not heard by Greenpeace.
Successively I ask support to an italian lawyer (Gerardo Iorlano) which seem to be willing to help, but actually he never starts any procedure.

To be strange

People is afraid of what they don’t understand. Often the simplest things are not understood.

On a boat, while other members of the crew are obeying orders to dispose highly polluting waste in the sea, I am the strange person, I am odd because I don’t do it.

Being strange means simply not to comply with the majority, but when the majority is doing evil, do you want to be normal or strange?

People following, people leading

Often I angrily ask myself how is possible that the most persons just follow trends, mode and attitude of others…
Why can’t anyone create his own life?
Well, the answer I have found is that we, are supposed to be like that, if there would be more leaders than followers it would not work out. Following other’s way of being is also a conservative natural protection we have, to avoid getting in situations that could harm us…

Unfortunately, in the maritime sector, the leading figures are not always the best example to follow, while the followers – the crew – does not use any common sense obeying even criminal orders…

The fun of curiosity

I mostly start to do things for fun, because I think that I would enjoy the situations where I end up in circumstances which I would never have expected.

The most peculiar fact is, that I often discovered the ‘real meaning’ of my presence, in a certain situation, just at the end of the events, or later.  The ‘real meaning’ that I discover, turns out to become much different that the reason why I started to do a certain thing, that ‘real meaning’ becames my purpose, which I was not aware of initially.

Working on boats for about three years, and in the harbour afterwards, made me having tasks which maybe didn’t fit at all with my desire, but, I have learned and discovered things that would have been for me impossible to know otherwise.

Each of us has his level of superficiality, some people pollute while not even thinking about it, they may recognize it or not as devastating practice, often they do it, not just because they have no values nor ethics,  but because of their superficiality.

I was thinking about my own superficiality, it seems strange, I don’t repute myself to be superficial, but still:
– I don’t want to live in The Netherlands cause I don’t like the way dutch is spoken there
– I don’t enjoy really much finnish architecture
I do choose a country where I live in also based on those two things: architecture and language, which could be considered as superficial by someone.

Movies & Reality, the opposite of each other

Almost all the things that are fascinating and thrilling in videos or movies, are horrible in reality: war, killings, homelessness, catastrophes…

Romanticizing the worst

Boats accidents, Homelessness, soldiers, survival situations and even mafia.
Does it seems to be funny, exotic, nice, charming or disgusting to you?

Paradoxically enough, we tend to romanticize all the worst possible situations, attitudes or jobs.
Maybe it’s a kind of play-down that we automatically set up in order to relieve ourself from harsh reality.

We are bombarded with videos showing us how beautiful boats are, and consequently, we all love to go for a cruise-boat trip.
Boats are actually highly disturbing the life, ecosystem and natural balance of aquatic environments. In fact, just the presence of any floating structure, alters small and big marine settings. The most people is not even aware of this.

One ‘freedom’

We like to have the ‘freedom’ to do whatever we want and we often misuse that ‘freedom’. For sure in highly industrialized and economically developed countries.

Freedom to travel should not be equal to freedom to pollute without reason, taking an airplane or a boat, just because the ticket was so cheap, it’s an example of misuse.

One wants the freedom to “own” a dog

The dog has no freedom to choose,

Others have no freedom to walk in a park without shoes to become brown.

One wants the freedom to smoke

Others have no freedom to breath clean air,

No freedom to have no cancer,

No freedom to have clean streets.

One ask for freedom to listen loud music

Others have no freedom to quietness,

No freedom to choose what to listen.

One wants to have the freedom to consume and pollute as much as wished,

The fish has no freedom to be free from plastic in his environment,

Other people have no freedom to swim because of the contamination.

Behind any freedom, there is a non-freedom.

Recycling in Denmark, Find what you need, when you need, if you need

I just lost my socks from the window, I go in the night for a bicycle ride, I find nearly new socks right away.

I am with no sheets nor blankets, I need some, I notice on google map a place called “consignment shop”, in Copenhagen and I save it on my map.
After few days I get lost, I look on the map of my smartphone and I notice I am nearby the place I starred previously as “consignment shop”. Not just I find sheets and blankets, but pillows too. The only missing are pillowcases, but I just spotted some white t-shirt that can serve as it.

There are a lot of places in Denmark called “genbrugsstation”, containers park / consignment shops, where you can dispose the garbage and exchange items in a dedicated space, “the free shop”.

Nature & Sharing

Sharing and get benefit from each other is everything but new. With the boom of the sharing economy we all see how much beneficial sharing goods or services can be, Nature does it all the time.
In nature it’s practically impossible for one individual to use more resources that what he is supposed to, just we, as capitalistic artificial humans, have created a vicious circle that puts inequality, and related pollution, at the first place.
Let’s say you want to have food and water, if you eat a watermelon you get them both, in exchange you will spread around the seeds of the plant, giving a favor back, this is so implicit to nature that you don’t even notice you are helping the plant by eating the fruit…

Technology vs Nature

How to know when tech is going against nature?
Well, one easy attitude would be to use technology to better understand and follow nature’s rules.

Expensive things kill you

It’s quite paradoxical that expensive things are in many cases not good, while free, or inexpensive stuff, is making us live longer :

The most expensive things

– Drugs –  they kill you

– Cars & vehicles in general (boats included) – statistically kill more than any war

– Plastic surgery – you get also psychological problems from it

While free things are so healthy

– Water  – the most healthy drink

– Fruit – the best food

– Fasting – once a month or a week it purifies the body

I am changing, I changed, I did so many changes that if I change more I become like I was in the beginning.

Why Camping, nature and wildlife are beneficial

Doing wilde ‘uncomfortable’ life, is not just nice to be in contact with nature, get healthier, more spiritual, down to earth and rewild ourself, but also helps us appreciate the commodities we have in everyday life like water, electricity and other luxuries…

The ‘Floating City’ and the childhood

In Copenhagen there is a magic place, one of the few boats that does not pollute at all: The floating city.

It’s a self organized space, where many activities take place regarding recycling and reusing.
They even builded up by them-self boats with recycled materials. I had the pleasure to meet them and stay on the recycled catamaran for short.

When I was a kid, I use to play with a group of other kids in building up a mini villages, constructing small combs with wood and spending a lot of time in that projects. There, at the floating city the same is happening, bringing my feelings to my childhood.
Just with more tools.

Humans vs Animals

who is the smartest animal?

Are chickens stupid?

We may say that chickens are stupid because we have the technology to measure their brain size…
But, are we sure we are smarter than chickens?
If we see how many things we have destructed on this planet, well, chickens are smarter than us because they didn’t damage at all.
We could discuss endless about how smart we are boosting humans above other animal spieces, we can say we have the most developed brain and we won the challenge to dominate nature…
But if we take into account that we are the only animal contaminating air, water and soil, the essential to live, what else should we talk about?

One of the other differences between humans and other animals is that humans have the peculiarity to kill other of their own specie with madness.

Cyclonudista Helsinki 12 june
Cyclonudista Helsinki 12 june

I am already starting to promote the new Cyclonudista event, even if I will not be there that time.

I am sure that the Manifiesta will be great!

Naked we are equal, or almost.

World naked bike ride official site

Facebook Event – Cyclonudista Helsinki

On Ilta-sanomat (a finnish newspaper) they are quite criticizing the ride:

After they interviewed me I still have something to say,  maybe even more important than what I said in the interview (cause during an interview you don’t always have much time to think about what to say).

This event has two big messages (at least for me):

1) PROMOTING CYCLING  (and similar transportation means):

A bicycle is:

Social (you have the chance  to communicate with people next to you if you cycle)

Mark of independency Makes the cycler feeling satisfacted of himself being able to move with “his legs”,

Challenging you to repair it yourself feeling even more proud of yourself,

Natural (keeps you in contact with the earth),

Panoramic: it makes you admire the view you have around,

Sincere and transparent (cause you can’t hide yourself),

Easily movable/carriable,

Makes you look younger (study from Stanford University),

Increase your brain power (Research of Illinois University),

Sportive (Low-impact type of exercise),

Easy to park,

Making  you feel traveling (you see where you are, and discover slowly places),

Making you Breathing good air (when you are between the trees),

Setting you on a higher point of view than in a car,

Flexible to stop where you want,

Making you go wherever you want,

Allowing you to listen audio-books or music during the trip = learning,

… Even more reasons here:

While big motorized vehicle (such as cars) are:

arrogantly invading the city,

making  pedestrians and cyclers wait long time at the traffic light breathing gasoline,

Covering the beauty of architecture and landscape,

under the capitalist monopoly of politics and economy,

Making social discrimination,

Expensive (to drive and to maintain)

Support the oil industry,

Slow, (cars go in average 14 km/h in the cities),

Make traffic congestion,

Anti-social (cause you lock yourself in the car, you are kind of alienated),

Hard to park (there is often no space to park),

And counting:

Simplicity (you no need much to feel good),

Love for your body = love for yourself = love for humans

Freedom to show yourself,

Freedom to not have anything with you,

Refusing all accessories that this society continuously propose us,

Showing how delicate you are,

Naked you are equal to anybody else,

You are not hiding behind masks,

and more:

In this article it looks like that the police come to stop us or to argue. Is not true, actually I notified in advance to the police that we were about to do this protest and they were there to block the traffic and give us the right of manifesting.

Kids have no problems with nudity, adults are the ones that teach them (wrongly) that nudity is a bad thing, kids grow up with this uncomfort for their body cause adults continuously told them that they have to cover them self all the time.

Is not in my intention to offend or irritate people by being naked, I am not asking (directly) that we should all go around naked, but I ask to be listened, I would like that people realize that simple naturalistic nudity (which appears as a bad thing) is not harming anyone, while pollution, over-consuming and waste is destroying us, we can’t eat from trees cause they are polluted, we can’t drink from rivers cause they are contaminated, we can’t breath in cities (and soon also outside cities) because air is full of  particulates.

We no need to be scientists to understand this, just take a deep breath in middle of the traffic jam and see how you feel.

Facebook Group – Cyclonudista Helsinki

Finnish national newspaper Helsingin Sanomat writes about my lifestyle

On the beach in Helsinki during the summer
On the beach in Helsinki during the summer

In this article they talk about my sleeping place (the forest), the article is quite spiced up and on the pictures I look like a refugee.

Want to know the “interpreted” things that I said? :

There it looks like the only reason why I sleep in the forest is because I don’t want (or can’t) pay a rent in Helsinki, which is not the reason, but of course one more benefit of sleeping in the forest.
Is not the high cost of housing that driven me to sleep in the forest, I do it cause I love the nature, and trees.
Also I didn’t say the forest is my house, I said my house is where I am.

When I said: “People do not believe me when I tell that I sleep outdoors. They provide immediate assistance and

offer to host me.” I also continued by saying that
”not always I accept their offer to host me, because I like to be between trees
and as close as possible with the earth” – text which was cutted off in the article.

Of course the fact stays that in Finland (for sure in the center of Helsinki) prices for housing are quite high and people that can’t afford a place have big problems during the winter.

I wanted to comment on the website but they quite censured me, my comment never showed up.

I aslo contacted them afterwards but I received no answer.

conclusion: never trust the mass media, get your information by yourself.
